Why Apply to Honors Colleges

Many schools offer honors programs as a way to draw in highly talented students. The requirements typically involve exceptional test scores and high GPAs, and some programs may ask students to submit an essay or respond to separate application questions to be considered. Although it may seem like extra work, applying to an honors program, and being accepted, often comes with perks and opportunities not accessible to all students. Upon graduation, an honors student’s diploma may include an honors distinction as well.

Probably the biggest perk of applying to an honors program is scholarship opportunities, some of which can be substantial and will help with the overall cost of college. In some cases, schools offer full-tuition scholarships for select honors students. It is important to note this when you are researching schools and can help you strategize your college list.

Another benefit is that schools often prioritize their honors students when it comes to housing decisions and class selection. Some schools may offer students special dorms, where only honors students reside. When living with like-minded students, the spaces are often better environments for studying and may have closer proximity to areas on campus, such as the library or cafeteria. Since honors students also have different course requirements, and many schools allow them priority registration, they are able to select classes before any other group. This perk alone creates flexibility when they are building their class schedule each semester.

Honors students can focus their time on deepening their knowledge and engaging in their studies.

Honors programs also create social, as well as academic opportunities, which can impact an honors student’s overall college experience. Depending on the individual program, students may experience networking opportunities through organized social events, guest speakers, and honors societies. By forming connections through classes and social events, many honors students are also offered internships, study abroad experiences, and research opportunities as a result of their connection to the honors program. Students can also include their honors experience on their job resume, which will set them apart from other candidates.

It is important to keep in mind that each college will have different perks and opportunities, so it is important to research them individually before making decisions about applying to an honors program.
