Most colleges ask for an essay in the admissions process. The college uses the essay to find out about you. They want to know your values, how you think, what’s important to you. Sometimes the school will give a choice of essays topics and sometimes it will be a specific topic.
Steps to Writing a Winning Essay
1. Think about yourself. What are your strengths and weaknesses.
2. Brainstorm about all the potential things you could include in the essay.
3. Group the topics from your brainstorming together to get a clearer view of sub-themes for your essay.
4. Choose a positive quality to convey to the committee. Are you creative, analytical, steadfast?
5. Think about a time in your life where you demonstrated that quality.
6. Create an outline for the essay.
7. Write the essay.
8. Wait a little time and then edit the essay.
9. Get feedback from parents, teachers, friends.
10. Proof read the essay twice more to make check for spelling and grammatical errors and to make sure it’s concise.
